Independent evaluation of the
NPSA national campaign
An independent research programme to evaluate the effectiveness of the
campaign was funded by the Department of Health in England and commissioned by the Patient Safety Research
Programme (now the Patient Safety Research Portfolio).
The research programme is being carried out by five collaborating institutions/professional
societies. Additional funding is being provided by Royal Free Hospital Trustees and GOJO Industries.
The two elements of the research programme are:
- the National Observational Study to Evaluate the cleanyourhands
Campaign (NOSEC) – a four-year multidisciplinary study to provide an independent assessment of the campaign
and to determine whether it is sustainable over time, and
- the Feedback Intervention Trial (FIT) – a randomised controlled
trial of an intervention to sustain hand hygiene compliance in the long term.
