Decontamination is the combination of processes (including cleaning, disinfection and sterilization) used to make re-usable medical devices safe for further use on patients and handling by staff. The effective decontamination of re-usable medical devices is essential in reducing the risk of transmission of infectious agents.

This Decontamination Training Programme is for all staff who are directly involved in the Decontamination of reusable surgical instruments, and for those whose role requires an appreciation of decontamination principles. It is fully supported by Health Estates and funded by the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety.
