HPSS Superannuation Scheme

HPSS Superannuation Scheme membership for GP Locum Medical Practitioners

Following the setting up of Medical Performers Lists in Northern Ireland the HPSS Superannuation Scheme Regulations were amended on 16 December 2005 opening up Scheme membership to freelance locum practitioners from 1 April 2001.
In addition, GPs who were already Scheme members were allowed to "pension" their GP locum earnings from 1 April 2002.
From 16 December 2005 all GPs (including locums) must be registered on a HSS Board’s Medical Performers List. Freelance GP locums and mainstream GPs who perform GP locum work can "pension" their HPSS locum earnings. This includes HPSS work undertaken for a GMS practice.
GP locum work undertaken under a commercial arrangement cannot count towards Scheme membership.
