Changes to the HPSS Superannuation Scheme
On the 1st April 2008 a number of changes were introduced to the HPSS Superannuation Scheme, including a change of name to the HSC Superannuation Scheme.
From the same date a new HSC Pension arrangement was introduced for new members who joined on or after the 1st April 2008.
This page sets out how the changes will affect different people.
Scheme members
On 1 April 2008 the HPSS Superannuation Scheme is changing although your pension will retain key features like a normal retirement age of 60 and a pension based on your final salary. The name of the scheme will change to the Health and Social Care (HSC) Superannuation Scheme.
At the same time a brand new scheme will be introduced for new members who join on or after this date. The name of the new scheme will be called the Health and Social Care (HSC) Pension Scheme. This scheme will have a normal retirement age of 65. You will have the opportunity to move your pension into this new scheme for a limited period, planned to run from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. The new scheme provides greater flexibility around how and when you take your pension, which may better suit some members' retirement plans. A printed leaflet with basic information about the changes is being provided to employers to circulate with January's pay advice, but you can read more now in the downloads below.

Non-members
If you work for the Health Service but are not a scheme member, or expect to join the Health Service soon, you will be able to join the current scheme up to 31 March 2008.
If you join the HPSS Superannuation Scheme on or before 31 March 2008, your pension will be subject to changes described under heading ‘Scheme members’. Like them, you will have the choice of switching to the New Health and Social Care (HSC) Pension Scheme for a limited period, planned to run from 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2010. If you become a scheme member for the first time on or after 1 April 2008, you will only be able to join the New HSC Pension Scheme. A printed leaflet with basic information about how the HPSS Superannuation Scheme is changing is being provided to employers to circulate with January’s pay advice, but you can read more now in the download below.

Pensioners
If your pension started (or will start) before 1 April 2008 the changes will not affect anything about your pension or what will happen should you die and leave dependants.
The same rules and benefits will continue to apply to your pension as those described in the booklet 'A Guide for pensioners and their dependants' that you were given when you retired. We will shortly be writing to Health Service pensioners individually about the changes.
Deferred members
Former contributors to the pension scheme who leave the Health Service before retirement and do not transfer their pension to another pension scheme, or take a refund of contributions, are known as ‘deferred’ members. This is because payment of pension is deferred until retirement age.
The changes do not affect members who have, or will, become deferred members before 1 April 2008 UNLESS you are thinking of returning to work in the Health Service. In this case you are advised to read the information in the download below. We will shortly be writing to deferred members individually about the changes.
