GMC Commence mail-out to doctors
From Monday 5 December 2011, the GMC will begin to mail-out a leaflet about revalidation to all doctors on the medical register. The leaflet outlines what doctors should be doing to get ready for the introduction of revalidation in late 2012. This will be the first in a series of direct contacts between the GMC and all doctors to make sure they are ready for revalidation.
Patient and Colleague Feedback Pilot in Primary Care
The Confidence in Care Programme in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA) commenced a pilot for approximately 120 doctors in the last quarter of 2011. Participants work in a range of settings eg in single–handed practices, as sessional doctors, in out of hours surgeries or as practitioners with special interests.
Patient and colleague feedback is one of the required elements of supporting information to be submitted once in each 5 year revalidation cycle. The purpose of the pilot will be to provide an opportunity to test the process of obtaining responses from patients and colleagues and how the content of the feedback will be integrated into the appraisal interview.
Further information will be made available on this website when the pilot is completed and evaluated in early 2012
CONFIDENCE IN CARE PROGRAMME BACKGROUND:
In December 2008 the DHSSPS established the “Confidence in Care” programme co-chaired by the Chief Medical Officer (Dr Michael McBride) and the Chief Nursing Officer (Angela McLernon - Acting). This programme has been designed to deliver on the recommendations of the White Paper “Trust, Assurance and Safety”
and the outstanding actions of the DHSSPS report “Improving Patient Safety: Building Public Confidence”
At its' outset it was envisaged that this complex programme would run for a period of 2-3 years to provide assurances in relation to safer patient/client care and enhance the Publics' confidence in health and social care professionals.
Programme Objectives
The overarching objectives of the programme are:
- To ensure effective engagement as appropriate with the Minister
- To ensure, through robust programme management, that the recommendations of the DoH working groups and the outstanding work associated with the DHSSPS report “Improving Patient Safety: Building Public Confidence” are successfully coordinated, implemented, monitored and evaluated in Northern Ireland.
- to ensure effective representation , and quality of input, from Northern Ireland into the working groups and harmonisation of the regulatory framework in Northern Ireland
- To ensure there is effective communication with key stakeholders throughout Northern Ireland, taking account of the diversity of professional roles and locations.
In the context of the programme we have identified ‘stakeholder’ as meaning those who are affected by or capable of influencing strategy. These may be:
- Key Stakeholders: those who have a position of high importance within the programme or a significant influence upon it.
- Secondary Stakeholders: those persons (or organisations) indirectly affected by programme objectives.
- Primary Stakeholders: those who are ultimately affected, either positively or negatively by programme objectives.

Programme Groups
The Confidence in Care Programme originally incorporated four workstreams. Recently however the Professional Regulation and Pharmacy workstreams have been stood down as work in relation to these two areas has been progressed as far as is possible within the context of the Programme and are being progressed under HR Directorate and Pharmacy Group respectively.
The two remaining workstreams Tackling Concerns (Locally and Nationally) and Medical and Non-Medical Revalidation were merged to be taken forward by the Revalidation Delivery Board.
