All Ireland Traveller Health Study
The Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) together with the Department of Health and Children (DOHC) launched the All Ireland Traveller Health Study Reports on 2 September 2010. The Birth Cohort Follow Up Report was launched separately in September 2011.
The study, which was launched in July 2007, examined the health status and health needs of all Travellers living in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The Traveller community has been recognised as a disadvantaged group and the findings of this study provide a framework to work upon to ensure that Travellers have good access to healthcare services to meet their needs.
The Summary of Findings report highlights a number of key points which DHSSPS (and DOHC) will need to consider and take forward appropriately in conjunction with Health and Social Care bodies and other Government Departments.
Some of the key points include:
- A strategic action plan should be developed
- Adequacy of accommodation is essential
- All aspects of mother and child services merit top priority
- Men’s health issues need to be addressed specifically
- There is a concerted need to address cause-specific issues for respiratory and cardiovascular disease
Includes background, methodology, analysis, major findings and highlights key points.
Alongside the executive summary above the report is further broken into 3 technical reports and an appendix, which are available below.
Technical Report 1 features the findings of the Census of Travellers Population and a Quantitative Study of Health Status and Health Utilisation.
Technical Report 2 reports on Demography and Vital Statistics including mortality and life expectancy data, a preliminary report of the Birth Cohort Study and a report on Travellers in Institutions. The final report of the Birth Cohort Study (Part D) (PDF 7.8MB) is available to download.
