Social Services Inspectorate
Lay Members of Inspection Teams
In keeping with the Citizen's Charter and Government policy all our
inspection teams now include lay members. They are people who do not work in the agencies we are inspecting
and they do not have any financial interest in the services. Their job is to obtain the views of people
who use the services and the public so that these are taken account of in our inspections. They also
complement the work done by professional inspectors and bring fresh ideas into our work which can help
us to make sure that standards are applied effectively and evenly across all sectors.
All lay members are required to give a written undertaking to safeguard
the confidentiality of all information they receive in the course of their work.
