Key areas of responsibility include:
- to work with others to ensure Criminal Justice Services are responsive to need and assure public confidence;
- providing input in relation to policy development and professional
issues with regard to Youth Justice Services, including:
- juvenile justice centre;
- diversionary services;
- services for young offenders provided by voluntary bodies e.g. NIACRO and Extern; and
- restorative Justice/Youth Conferencing;
- providing input in relation to policy development and professional
issues with regard to:
- Adult Justice Services;
- approval of programmes in prisons;
- facilitating safe and child-centred visiting in prisons; and
- resettlement of prisoners;
- screening assessment of need for and securing access to secure accommodation in particular for children under 13 years;
- Inspection/Evaluation Activity in partnership with
Criminal Justice Inspectorate Northern Ireland (CJINI)
;
- oversight and participation in Research Projects.;
- professional advice in relation to specified criminal justice and related issues to Policy Branches, other Government Departments, Agencies, statutory, voluntary, private and community sector organisations, where appropriate; and
- representing the OSS in a number of DHSSPS and external groupings relevant to the above areas of work.
