Information is collected annually relating to category of home and facilities available, gender and age of children accommodated in homes, and places available and average weekly occupancy in the homes.

At 31 March 2007 there were 59 children's homes in Northern Ireland providing 403 places.  Of these homes 45 were statutory and 14 were independent homes.
