Introduction of Compulsory Registration for Social Care Workers With The Northern Ireland Social Care Council
Your views are being sought on the introduction of compulsory registration of social care workers with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council.
Social care workers make a significant and positive difference in many peoples’ lives, providing daily support and care for some of the most vulnerable people in our community.
The Northern Ireland Social Care Council (the NISCC) was set up in 2001 with the aim of strengthening protection for service users and improving standards of social care practice through the registration and regulation of the workforce. There has been a planned voluntary roll-out of registration of social care workers since 2003 and to date there are 7,122 social care registrants on the NISCC Register out of a workforce of approximately 29,000.
The aim is to ensure that full registration of the social care workforce is achieved and that we have a competent, confident workforce, one in which every worker is trusted by service users and their families.
This document sets out the proposals for a phased approach to the introduction of compulsory registration, including options for enforcement.
