Consultation on proposed amendment to the Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 1973.
In compliance with Regulation 4 of the Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 1973, approximately 530 exemption certificates are issued annually to community pharmacies. The requirement that these exemption certificates must be issued annually to community pharmacies constitutes a huge administrative burden both on DHSSPS staff and on community pharmacists.
Medicines Regulatory Group , (MRG) Pharmacy Branch DHSSPS considers that a revision of Regulation 4(6) of Misuse of Drugs (Safe Custody) (Northern Ireland) Regulations 1973 to increase the period for which a certificate remains in force from 1 year to 5 years from the date of issue would reduce the burden and enable other demands to be met. The MRG is of the opinion that the security of controlled drugs would not be compromised by increasing the validity of a certificate from 1 year to 5 years.
